Mr. Ron was our Tuk Tuk driver for every day we toured around the whole area of Angkor Wat and the outlying temples. You can't do this on foot. He charged $10.00 U.S. a day, and he was our personal chauffeur from sunrise to sunset. Remember, $10 a day is HUGE money for him, and we tipped him too.
This guy always had a smile on his face and seemed like the happiest guy on the planet. On the third day when we were all sitting down drinking Pepsi in the heat, I was able to get him to relate his life under the Khmer Rouge. He said he worked in a rice field for many years and his entire family were either killed by the Khmer Rouge outright or died in the fields. If you've seen the movie "Killing Fields", then you will have an idea of the conditions he worked under. The people were trapped in the fields because the Khmer Rouge land mined the surrounding area. As Pol Pot said, "Land mines are my perfect soldiers."
Mr. Ron took us to some incredibly breathtaking sights, and he was always a good source to check if we had been ripped off by a souvenir vendor or not.
This guy was great.
